During one of our scenic cruising days, it was rainy, so I used that time to go have a fabulous spa day. While sailing on a Seabourn cruise to Alaska, there are a bevy of leisurely and dynamic activities to take part in.
This was a real highlight for me, and not too badly priced all things considered. It was about a 15-minute scenic ride up, over the stunning views of Mendenhall Glacier, until we landed at the dogsledding camp. There, we got to go for a 20-minute or so ride around the glacier, meet some of the husky puppies, and then a short helicopter ride back down to Juneau. It was a fabulous experience, and my only critique would be that I wish the helicopter ride was a bit longer and that not everyone gets a window seat on the helicopter. And even if you don’t want to do dogsledding, at least take a helicopter or seaplane flight to one of the other glaciers near Juneau, like Taku Glacier.
Enjoy an evening cocktail at the Open-Air Sky Bar or Panoramic Observation Bar, and meet new friends at the Caviar on the Ice Deck Party. Throughout your cruise, Seabourn has plenty of engaging entertainment to keep you busy while you sail to your next destination. If you’re looking for something to do here besides the bears, you can book a jet boat tour out to the Sitkine River for another chance to get up close and personal with a glacier on the water.
Seek out magnificent glacier views across the fjord or take a journey aboard the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. Expand your appreciation for world by engaging with our on-board team of experts, who will hold Seabourn Conversations on topics ranging from marine biology, ornithology, geology, history, and photography. Listen to our naturalist experts as they wax poetic on the local bears, whales, and other endemic wildlife to Alaska and British Columbia, Canada. When it comes to dressing for your adventure, choose versatile, multi-use pieces like T-shirts you can wear under your shirt as an extra layer or for warmth by itself. Pick shirts that are lightweight, moisture-wicking, and come with SPF sun protection and/or insect repellent (large sporting-goods stores are a good place to find shirts most or all of the above). Also, pack long, lightweight, fast-drying pants to further lighten your luggage.
The Colonnade also hosts regionally-themed, bistro-style dinners with table service each night. For a midday snack or light dinner, enjoy grilled specialties, salads, sides, and pizzas at The Patio or the Sky Grill. Cruising Alaska has always been on my bucket list, so when I was given the opportunity to sail in luxury on the Seabourn Sojourn for the 14-Day Ultimate Alaska Glacier and Fjord Adventure in late June, I snatched it up. The itinerary took us on a two-week journey out of Anchorage (Seward) to Vancouver through some of the best spots in Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage, like Tracy Arm and the Misty Fjords. We were able to do excursions such as a helicopter flight up to a dogsledding camp, kayaking up to a glacier with the Ventures by Seabourn team, and taking my very first seaplane flight over the Misty Fjords. I found that choosing the 14-day Alaska cruise option made for the best itinerary over most 7-day cruise options, and my experience with the weather while sailing in late June and early July was wonderful.
